QAL celebrates decarbonisation and partnership milestone in 2024 review

Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) released its annual 2024 Sustainable Development scorecard, summarising our refinery’s performance across five key pillars: safety, partnership, people, growth, and cash.

The report highlights QAL’s strong performance across all categories. We maintained our safety maturity model score, achieved over one million hours without a recordable injury, increased female and Indigenous participation in the workforce, and made significant community investments.

QAL General Manager, Trent Scherer, stated that our operational performance and achievements over the past year demonstrate that we are on track to continue operating safely, stably, and sustainably, responsibly growing value for future generations.

“The Sustainable Development scorecard provides a clear, comparable snapshot of our refinery’s performance in relation to the business’s focus areas,” Trent said.

“While our operations support the global demand for alumina, we are proud to have supported the local aluminium supply chain in the heart of the Gladstone community for nearly 60 years.

“In 2024, QAL made significant progress in future-proofing our decarbonisation project, Double Digestion, by securing $94 million in federal support and receiving approval to proceed with the feasibility study and detailed design of this cornerstone project.”

QAL’s investment in the growth and longevity of the local community remains strong. Last year, our operations spent $918.3 million on Australian goods and services, including $323.2 million in the 4680 region alone.

Through QAL’s sponsorships and donations program, over 30 non-profit organisations received funding comprising an investment of $107,825 to community groups and local events that directly support the strong community in which we operate.

“QAL is proud to be delivering value for our community now, and well into the future,” Trent shared.
